Star Volunteer Fire Department marks 50th year with BBQ fundraiser

STAR, Mississippi — The Star Volunteer Fire Department will mark its 50th year with a barbecue fundraiser Saturday, June 20, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Star Baptist Church CLC parking lot, officials said. The drive-thru sale will continue until the meals are sold out.

Chicken and hamburger plates cost $10 each and include baked beans, coleslaw, bread and a drink, the department said in a news release. Fire Chief Jackie Squires encouraged residents to stop by and support the department.

“Come buy a plate, stop by and say hi, show a little support,” Squires said on Facebook. “Your hometown crews are ready and willing to not only serve you a hot meal but to serve you in your emergency. All monies raised goes to valuable equipment to help us on any call.”

The all-volunteer department has served the Star community since 1976 and operates under the motto “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward lifesaving equipment, and organizers said donations are welcome in addition to plate sales. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
