Volunteer adopts dog Asher after 653 days at Corinth-Alcorn shelter

CORINTH, Mississippi — After 653 days in its care, the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter said a volunteer has adopted Asher, a dog rescued in a multi-animal cruelty case two summers ago.

The shelter said Asher arrived July 30, 2024, frightened and uncertain after enduring difficult conditions. He was one of 28 dogs rescued in the case, the shelter said, and spent nearly two years receiving care and rehabilitation before an adoption was finalized.

Grady, a shelter volunteer, chose to make Asher part of his family, the shelter said, and staff thanked him for giving the dog a home. Shelter officials said Asher’s long journey underscores the importance of patience, ongoing medical and behavioral care and continued community support for animals waiting to be adopted.

Long stays are not uncommon for animals recovered from cruelty or in need of rehabilitation, and advocates say adoptions by volunteers can help ease shelter capacity and provide stable homes. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
