Slight risk threatens parts of Mississippi

Parts of Mississippi face a Slight (Level 2) risk for severe storms on Aug. 20, 2026, with the main threat expected between 3 and 9 p.m., a Facebook post said. The post warned that severe storms could bring damaging winds up to 60 mph and that isolated severe storms remain possible.

The term Slight (Level 2) refers to the second level on the five-tier categorical risk scale used by the U.S. Storm Prediction Center to communicate the potential for organized severe weather. It indicates a higher-than-marginal chance of scattered severe storms, though widespread extreme conditions are not forecast.

The post urged residents to stay weather-aware this afternoon and evening, keep up with the latest forecasts, make sure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and know where they would go if severe weather threatens their area. Those steps are recommended by emergency management officials and meteorologists to reduce risk during severe thunderstorm events.

Severe thunderstorms in Mississippi can produce damaging winds, hail and localized flooding and may disrupt travel and utilities. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
