Rankin County sheriff warns residents of scam using fake document
Rankin County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post that it has been notified of a new scam being circulated to area residents that uses a professionally appearing but false document to try to extract money.
The agency said the image is being sent to potential victims in hopes they will contact the scammers and be manipulated into sending money. Despite its appearance, the department said the document contains numerous errors and inaccurate information.
The sheriff’s office warned residents not to contact the senders or send money and to refuse requests for personal identity information, regardless of who the caller or texter claims to be. The post said the image was likely created using an artificial intelligence platform to deceive victims.
Anyone with questions about the legitimacy of a caller or text demanding payment can contact the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department at 601-825-1480. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
