Pike County Sheriff’s Office officials say deputies and multiple law enforcement, fire, EMS and emergency response agencies will conduct an active shooter training exercise at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday at North Pike Middle School, 2034 Highway 44 East in Summit, Mississippi.
Officials warned residents they may see a significant presence of law enforcement vehicles, fire apparatus, ambulances, emergency personnel and a helicopter in the area and asked the public not to be alarmed. The sheriff’s office said there is no active threat to the public.
Sheriff Bryant “Wally” Jones said the exercise is intended to strengthen coordination among first responders and ensure agencies are prepared to respond quickly and effectively in a real emergency. “We hope that we never have to use this training, but we need to be prepared if anything ever happens. Our number one priority is protecting our students, teachers, and communities. We are excited to partner with the North Pike School District and our fellow law enforcement and first responder agencies to make sure we are as prepared as possible,” he said.
The sheriff’s office asked for public understanding and cooperation during the drill. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
