Jackson Police camp tours chancery court, holds mock trial
Participants in the Jackson Police Department Blue Shield Summer Camp recently toured a chancery court and took part in a mock trial led by Judge Tametrice Hodges, the department said on its Facebook page.
The department said the visit provided campers with a unique, hands-on introduction to courtroom procedures and the judicial process, giving young people a chance to see how judges, attorneys and court staff work together to resolve cases.
The Blue Shield Summer Camp is a law-enforcement–run youth program aimed at community engagement and safety education. Mock trials and court tours are commonly used in civic education to demystify legal institutions and encourage interest in public-service careers.
Chancery courts typically hear matters involving family law, estates and other equity issues; observing or participating in a mock proceeding can help students understand the roles and responsibilities within the justice system.
Judge Tametrice Hodges led the exercise, which the department said inspired campers through hands-on learning. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
