Oxford pauses to remember during Memorial Day ceremony
Oxford paused Monday to honor those who died in military service as the OPD Honor Guard presented the colors during the city’s annual Memorial Day ceremony, a social media post said.
The post said the presentation of the colors was part of a ceremony remembering “those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.” The event took place on Memorial Day, the federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor U.S. service members who died while serving.
Honor guards are ceremonial units drawn from military and law enforcement organizations that present flags and escort caskets at funerals and memorials. Their role in public ceremonies is to provide a formal salute and to help communities acknowledge the service and sacrifice of fallen personnel.
Annual Memorial Day ceremonies often include flag presentations, moments of silence and other observances that bring communities together to remember the cost of war and to support veterans and families of the deceased. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
