Ridgeland hosts Memorial Day ceremony, unveils America250 exhibit
RIDGELAND, Miss. — The City of Ridgeland will hold a Memorial Day ceremony and unveil a new America250 exhibit on May 21 at Ridgeland City Hall, officials said. The public ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in Veterans Memory Park at City Hall, 100 W. School St.; guests are asked to arrive by 9:45 a.m.
Veterans Memory Park features memorial benches and plaques honoring the six branches of the U.S. military, along with the Walk of Heroes, a flagpole and a seven-foot bell tower. Retired Brig. Gen. Joe Hargett will deliver the keynote remarks. Gene McGee, mayor of Ridgeland, and Col. John McCollum also are scheduled to speak.
The program will include a presentation of colors by the Ridgeland High School AFJROTC and musical selections by the National Guard Band and Dr. Catherine Sledge. Chaplain David Morris and members of the Ridgeland Board of Aldermen and other city officials are expected to participate.
After the ceremony, attendees may tour an America250 exhibit curated by Nancy Batson, chair of the City History Committee. America250 is the national initiative marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and includes local programs that connect community history to the broader commemoration. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
