The National Weather Service office in Jackson canceled a severe thunderstorm warning for Rankin County, the office said on its Facebook page.
The Jackson office, which issues forecasts and warnings for central Mississippi, posts watches and warnings when storms pose a threat to life and property. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when forecasters believe storms are capable of producing damaging winds, large hail or heavy rainfall.
A cancellation means forecasters determined the immediate threat to the county had diminished or moved away, but hazardous weather can change quickly. Residents of Rankin County and nearby areas should continue to monitor local forecasts, radio, television and the National Weather Service for any new alerts and be prepared to take shelter if conditions worsen.
