NWS in Jackson issues severe thunderstorm warning for central Mississippi
The National Weather Service in Jackson issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 9:15 p.m. CDT for southeastern Rankin County, Simpson County, northwestern Smith County and southern Scott County in central Mississippi, the agency said.
At 8:15 p.m. CDT, the warning said a severe thunderstorm was located over Taylorsville, about 11 miles southwest of Bay Springs, moving northwest at 20 mph, according to radar indicated information. The storm carried 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail.
The warning said hail damage to vehicles is expected and that winds could damage roofs, siding and trees. The storm was projected to be near Mize around 8:20 p.m. CDT and Martinville around 9:00 p.m. CDT.
The NWS advised residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued to alert the public to dangerous winds, hail and potential property damage. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
