National Weather Service issues flash flood warning for southern Rankin County

The National Weather Service in Jackson issued a flash flood warning for southern Rankin County in central Mississippi until 3:45 p.m. CDT after Doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain, the agency said.

At 1:10 p.m. CDT, radar indicated rainfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches in two hours. The NWS said flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly and identified the source as radar data.

Authorities warned that flash flooding could affect small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other poor drainage and low-lying areas. The NWS listed Jackson, Brandon, Florence, Johns and Monterey among locations that could experience flooding.

Flash floods can develop rapidly and pose a serious danger to motorists and residents. Officials advise avoiding flooded roads, moving to higher ground and staying tuned to local emergency information. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
