National Weather Service issues tornado warning for Hinds County

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Hinds County early Wednesday, and a storm spotter reported a tornado touchdown in the Spring Ridge Road area near Raymond, a Facebook post said.

The post said many residents were awakened by iPhone storm alarms at 4:30 a.m. Hinds County Emergency Management Agency crews spent more than an hour riding county roads early Wednesday and reported little to no structural damage, the post said.

Tornado warnings are issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar and prompt residents to seek shelter immediately. Wireless emergency alerts, including those sent to smartphones, are designed to notify people who may be in the path of dangerous storms.

Raymond is the county seat of Hinds County, which includes parts of the Jackson metropolitan area. Local emergency management officials and the National Weather Service routinely monitor storms during severe weather outbreaks to assess impacts and coordinate response. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
