NWS issues severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi
The National Weather Service on Thursday issued Severe Thunderstorm Watch 181, in effect until 9 p.m. CDT for parts of northeastern Louisiana and much of central and southern Mississippi, the agency said.
The watch includes nine parishes in northeast Louisiana: Catahoula, Concordia, East Carroll, Franklin, Madison, Morehouse, Richland, Tensas and West Carroll.
In Mississippi the watch covers 30 counties, including Copiah, Hinds, Leake, Madison, Rankin, Scott, Simpson, Smith and Yazoo in central Mississippi; Clarke, Jasper, Kemper, Lauderdale, Neshoba and Newton in east central Mississippi; Jefferson Davis, Lawrence, Lincoln and Marion in south central Mississippi; Covington, Forrest, Jones and Lamar in southeast Mississippi; Adams, Claiborne, Franklin and Jefferson in southwest Mississippi; and Issaquena, Sharkey and Warren in west central Mississippi.
The watch area also includes numerous communities such as Anguilla, Bassfield, Bastrop, Bay Springs, Brandon, Brookhaven, Bude, Canton, Carthage, Collins, Columbia, De Kalb, Decatur, Delhi, Epps, Fayette, Ferriday, Forest, Harrisonburg, Hattiesburg, Hazlehurst, Heidelberg, Jackson, Laurel, Meridian, Natchez, Pearl, Philadelphia, Vicksburg, Yazoo City and many others.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for the development of severe storms. The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor forecasts, secure outdoor objects and take shelter if storms approach. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
