Mississippi urges storm victims to document damage, file claims quickly

JACKSON — The Mississippi Insurance Department on Friday urged homeowners affected by the May 6-7 storms to begin documenting damage and contact their insurance companies as recovery efforts continue across the state.

The department said residents should first review their insurance deductibles, assess property damage and determine whether filing a claim is necessary. The agency urged policyholders to begin the claims process as soon as possible, noting some insurance policies contain deadlines for reporting storm-related damage.

The department advised residents to gather policy information before filing claims and to keep detailed records of conversations with insurers, creditors and relief agencies. It recommended taking photographs or video of damaged property, creating an inventory of damaged or missing items, and saving receipts for temporary repairs and emergency expenses.

Officials said homeowners should make only temporary repairs needed to prevent additional damage until adjusters inspect properties and repair costs are agreed upon, and should ask insurers whether policies include coverage for additional living expenses. The department said smaller claims may be resolved quickly while widespread storm damage could lengthen processing times. Residents needing assistance can contact the Mississippi Insurance Department by phone or through its website. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
