Two EF3 tornadoes carve paths across south Mississippi

JACKSON, Mississippi — Two powerful EF3 tornadoes were among at least five twisters that tore across south Mississippi Wednesday night, leaving long paths of destruction, multiple injuries and hundreds of documented damage sites, the National Weather Service office in Jackson said.

Survey teams identified the Garden City tornado with peak winds of 136 mph that traveled 30.7 miles and injured one person, and an East Franklin-to-Monticello tornado with peak winds of 137 mph that tracked 35.9 miles, injured 12 people and grew as wide as 2,050 yards at times, the weather service said.

Officials said no fatalities were reported in any of the five confirmed tornadoes. National Weather Service survey teams said they assessed more than 70 miles of tornado tracks and documented 472 separate damage points Thursday.

Survey work remained underway Thursday night in areas including Lamar and Forrest counties that had not yet been fully examined, the office said. The weather service said it will continue analysis in the coming days using drone footage and high-resolution satellite imagery and that additional adjustments to tornado ratings and path details remain possible.

EF3 tornadoes typically cause severe damage. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
