Hinds County Sheriff’s Office mounted unit patrols downtown Jackson

Photos posted on the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page show a few members of the agency’s mounted unit in downtown Jackson during the lunch hour this afternoon, the agency said.

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is the primary law enforcement agency for Hinds County, which includes Jackson, the state capital of Mississippi. Sheriff’s offices typically provide patrol, investigative and correctional services for their jurisdictions.

Mounted units are commonly used by law enforcement for visible patrols, crowd management and community engagement. Officers on horseback gain an elevated vantage point that can improve observation in crowded urban environments.

Such patrols can increase public interaction and deter crime by maintaining a visible presence during busy periods such as the lunch hour, officials and observers say. The Facebook post included photos but did not provide additional operational details.

The agency did not release further information in the post. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
