Hattiesburg police investigate death on U.S. 49 South

Hattiesburg police are investigating the death of an adult male found in the 5000 block of U.S. 49 South, the department said. Officers responded at approximately 10:19 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, after receiving a report of a possible deceased person, which was confirmed at the scene, according to a Facebook post by the Hattiesburg Police Department.

The Hattiesburg Police Department is the primary law enforcement agency for the city of Hattiesburg in southern Mississippi and handles criminal investigations, traffic enforcement and public safety for the area. U.S. 49 is a major north-south highway through the region that carries local and through traffic.

Authorities did not release further details about the circumstances surrounding the death or identify the victim. Death investigations can involve detectives, crime-scene technicians and medical examiners and may temporarily affect traffic and local travel, officials said in general about such procedures.
