UMMC PROMISE program guides 32 students toward medical school
The University of Mississippi Medical Center said its PROMISE Program is providing guidance, support and opportunity to students preparing for medical school. Through the program, 32 students from colleges and universities across Mississippi are receiving mentorship, hands-on experiences and resources designed to help them succeed on the path to medical school, UMMC said.
UMMC, the state’s academic medical center that provides medical education and health care, said the program pairs participants with mentors and practical learning activities intended to strengthen applicants’ readiness for medical training. The initiative aims to give students exposure to clinical and academic environments that are part of medical education.
Pipeline and mentorship programs like PROMISE are used by medical centers and universities to help prospective physicians navigate a competitive admissions process and to expand opportunities for underrepresented or underserved students. Organizers say such programs can help participants build skills, professional networks and familiarity with clinical settings.
