UMMC opens Student Union food pantry to address student food insecurity
The University of Mississippi Medical Center announced the opening of a Student Union Food Pantry to help address food insecurity and other basic needs that can affect students’ ability to fully engage in their education, the center said in a Facebook post.
UMMC, the state’s academic health sciences campus and teaching hospital, trains a range of future health care professionals, from physicians and nurses to allied health practitioners. The new pantry reflects the center’s stated commitment to supporting students throughout their training journey.
Campus food pantries have become a common response at colleges and universities seeking to remove barriers that can impede academic progress, such as limited access to nutritious food and other essential resources. Administrators often cite student well-being and retention as reasons for such programs.
The university provided limited details in its post about operations and eligibility. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
