Project SEARCH at UMMC opens pathway to employment for young adults with developmental challenges

University of Mississippi Medical Center said Project SEARCH at UMMC provides more than job training for young adults with developmental challenges; it offers a pathway to confidence, independence and meaningful employment.

UMMC said in a post on its Facebook page and on its website that graduates of the program are demonstrating progress as they move toward workplace goals. The post directed readers to a news article on the UMMC site profiling the participants.

Project SEARCH is a program that places young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in workplace internships and provides on-the-job training, support and career coaching. Host organizations, often hospitals and businesses, partner with educators and employment specialists to tailor experiences aimed at long-term employment.

Supporters of such programs say they can increase employment opportunities and social inclusion for people who often face barriers to work. For employers, participants can become dependable employees who bring new perspectives to the workforce.

Details about individual graduates and outcomes were not provided in the social post. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
