Historian to discuss Lawrence Guyot and Freedom Democrats at Mississippi museums

Independent historian Chris Danielson will present “Lawrence Guyot, the Mississippi Movement, and the Rise and Fall of the Freedom Democrats” at noon Wednesday, Sept. 23, as part of the #HistoryIsLunch program at the Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.

Danielson’s book, “Brother Outsider, Brother Insider,” examines the life and work of Lawrence Thomas Guyot Jr., a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee field secretary in the 1960s. Guyot fought poverty and racism in the South and advocated voting rights for Black Mississippians.

The event is free and will be streamed live on the Mississippi Department of Archives and History’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Copies of Danielson’s book will be available for purchase, followed by a book signing.
