Lafayette County EMA urges caution as fire danger remains high

The Lafayette County Emergency Management Agency thanked residents for following the burn ban but warned that fire danger remains high because grass and leaves are dry.

The agency said even a small spark can start a fire and urged residents to secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, fully extinguish cigarettes and never throw them from vehicle windows.

Residents were also advised to mow and bush hog carefully, since blades striking rocks can create sparks, and to mow while grass is still damp. The agency recommended postponing outdoor welding and grinding; if that work cannot wait, it said to clear the area and keep water nearby.

The agency urged residents to check ATVs and other equipment, ensure spark arrestors are working and avoid tall, dry grass. Anyone who sees smoke or fire should call 911 immediately, the agency said, because early notification helps crews protect land and homes.
