Lafayette County sheriff’s office urges residents to secure garages

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to include their garages in their home security plans, warning that an unsecured garage can provide access to homes, vehicles, tools and other valuables.

The office recommends keeping the garage door closed when it is not being used and never leaving a garage-door remote in an unlocked vehicle. Residents should also lock the door connecting the garage to the home, including when they are home.

The guidance also advises securing garage windows and considering coverings to prevent people from seeing inside. Residents are encouraged to regularly check that the garage door and emergency release work properly.

For garages with keypads, the office recommends protecting the access code and changing it if residents believe it has been compromised. The message was issued by Sheriff Joey East and the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
