National Weather Service urges safe shelter during tornado warnings

The National Weather Service in Jackson is urging Mississippi residents to take shelter immediately when their area receives a Tornado Warning.

During a tornado threat, residents should move to the lowest floor and choose an interior room away from windows, such as a closet or bathroom. They should avoid large open spaces, including gyms and auditoriums.

Blankets, mattresses or helmets can be used to help protect against debris. The agency also advised people to identify their shelter options in advance and be prepared for severe weather.
