Ole Miss soccer falls 4-1 to Mississippi State in SEC opener

Ole Miss soccer lost 4-1 to Mississippi State in its Southeastern Conference opener Friday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford.

Mississippi State took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when Laila Murillo scored off an assist from Chiara Tappe. The Bulldogs held that advantage through halftime as Ole Miss goalkeeper Jenny Harrison kept the Rebels scoreless during the opening 45 minutes.

Ole Miss equalized at the 55:30 mark when Sarah Granno scored from outside the box on a pass from Cassidy Kuehne. It was Granno’s second goal of the season, while Kuehne recorded her first assist.

The Rebels were reduced to 10 players after a red card in the 69th minute. Mississippi State regained the lead 18 seconds later when Kati Anne Shepherd scored, then added goals from Kara Harris in the 81st minute and Murillo on a penalty kick in the 85th.

Mississippi State finished with a 13-11 edge in shots and put eight attempts on goal compared with seven for Ole Miss. The Rebels had five corner kicks and 54% of the possession, while Taylor Prigge made three saves in goal.

Ole Miss will next travel to Auburn, Alabama, to face Auburn on Friday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
