Southern Miss soccer falls 5-0 to James Madison in Sun Belt opener

Southern Miss soccer opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 5-0 loss to James Madison on Friday at Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex in Hattiesburg. The match was the Golden Eagles’ first conference contest under coach Danny Owens and ended a four-match unbeaten stretch.

James Madison took the lead in the 15th minute when Ginny Lackey scored. Holly Minshull added a goal in the 42nd minute, giving the Dukes a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Samantha DeGuzman scored in the 47th minute, and Audrey Orrock added another goal in the 64th. Ellie Farrell converted a penalty in the 85th minute to complete the scoring.

Southern Miss recorded 10 shots, with seven Golden Eagles attempting at least one. Ava Bynes led the team with three shots, while Olivia Tribolet had two shots and one on goal. Logan McGruder made three saves in goal.

James Madison held a 14-10 advantage in total shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.

Southern Miss will play its second Sun Belt match of the season Thursday, Sept. 24, against Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. Central time at A-State Soccer Complex.
