Mississippi Valley State opens SWAC play at Alabama State

Mississippi Valley State opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 26, against Alabama State at ASU Stadium in Montgomery. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. CT and will stream on SWAC TV. It is the Delta Devils’ third road game and first conference test of the 2026 season; Saturday is also Alabama State’s SWAC opener.

MVSU enters with a 1-3 record after four nonconference games. The Delta Devils earned their first victory, 31-20 over Lincoln (Pa.) at Soldier Field on Sept. 12, then lost 21-6 to Delta State in their home opener.

Quarterback Josh Brown has completed 47 of 83 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns. He also leads the team with 147 rushing yards on 28 carries. Dezmond Ray has added 107 yards on 25 carries, while Norman Taylor has 98 rushing yards and the team’s only rushing touchdown through four games.

Dayvian Bluitt leads the Delta Devils with 195 receiving yards on nine catches, one touchdown and a 79-yard long reception. Jaylen King has a team-high 14 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown, and Nicholas Buggs has six catches for 92 yards and one score. MVSU is averaging 240.5 yards of total offense per game, including 118.8 rushing yards and 121.8 passing yards.

The MVSU defense has recorded three interceptions. Joey Davis, Jamari Stokes and Tyrell Johnson have one each, with Johnson returning his interception 95 yards for a touchdown.

Alabama State is 2-1. The Hornets opened with wins over Southern, 30-17, and Lane College, 34-0, before losing 34-17 at Troy on Sept. 12. Alabama State enters the matchup after an open week.
