Jackson State volleyball beats Texas Southern 3-1 to open SWAC play 2-0

Jackson State volleyball defeated Texas Southern 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center in Jackson, improving to 2-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play and 6-9 overall.

The Tigers won 25-18, 16-25, 25-23 and 25-23. After Texas Southern evened the match in the second set, Jackson State secured three of the final four points to win the third set and then overcame a 17-17 tie in the fourth.

Hope Briggs led Jackson State with 14 kills, 16 points and three blocks. Shelby Zanders added six kills, three blocks and two aces, while Jayla David had five kills and three blocks. Mackenzie Moore finished with four kills on 12 attacks and one error.

Ryleigh Davis directed the offense with 24 assists and also recorded seven kills and eight digs. Naija Gadis added 16 assists. Giannelle Asomani had a match-high 26 digs, while Davis and Parker Featherstone each contributed eight.

Jackson State finished with 50 kills, 47 assists, 64 digs and eight total blocks.

The Tigers will travel to Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. first serve.
