Southern Miss soccer beats Nicholls 2-1 to close nonconference play

Southern Miss closed nonconference play with a 2-1 road victory over Nicholls on Thursday night at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex in Thibodaux, Louisiana. The Golden Eagles improved to 3-2-2, while Nicholls fell to 2-3-3.

Nicholls took the lead in the 26th minute when Alyssa Wheeler scored, but Southern Miss responded 10 seconds later. Maiko Kikuchi assisted Ava Bynes, who scored in the 27th minute to tie the match 1-1.

Olivia Tribolet put Southern Miss ahead in the 56th minute, with Vail Wartes providing the assist. Tribolet had hit the crossbar in the 50th minute before scoring six minutes later.

Nicholls finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots and put nine shots on goal to Southern Miss’ four. Each team had four corner kicks. Logan McGruder made six saves in 90 minutes for Nicholls.

Southern Miss opens Sun Belt Conference play against James Madison on Friday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. at Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex.
