Reeves hails approval to deepen Port of Gulfport to 46 feet
Gov. Tate Reeves said in a Facebook post that federal approval to deepen the Port of Gulfport to 46 feet is “a major win for Mississippi and our Gulf Coast.” He credited years of work and thanked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for helping reach the milestone.
Reeves said Mississippi has worked for nearly two decades to advance the project. He said deepening the port will allow bigger ships, move more cargo and create broader logistics opportunities that can boost trade through the state.
The Port of Gulfport is a major deep-water port on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast and serves as a gateway for regional commerce. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers oversees federal navigation and dredging projects, and its approvals are a critical step before construction and funding proceed.
Officials have said the channel upgrade could bolster economic development, but additional planning and work remain before ships begin using the deeper channel. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
