Storms leave 17 injured, damage hundreds of homes in Mississippi
PEARL, Miss. — Severe storms that moved through the state overnight left at least 17 people injured and damaged hundreds of homes, Gov. Tate Reeves said.
Reeves said initial assessments in Lamar County show 275 homes and 50 apartment units were damaged or inaccessible. He said 30 roads were closed because of debris, and the county shelter and safe room remained open. American Red Cross support was available.
In Lincoln County, more than 200 homes were damaged, Reeves said. He added that the Cajun Navy is deploying a 50-person shelter pod, a 30-kilowatt generator and 10 pallets of supplies. In Lawrence County, 12 homes were damaged and multiple roads were closed because of downed trees and power lines, officials said.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is supporting damage and operations assessments, and Reeves said road-clearing teams are being deployed. He said the state is sending additional resources as requested by local emergency managers. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
