Severe storms damage hundreds of Mississippi homes, MEMA says

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said in a Facebook post that severe weather and major flooding have damaged hundreds of homes and caused widespread infrastructure damage across the state.

Current reports indicate damage to 486 homes, seven businesses, three farms, 70 public roads, two public bridges, three public buildings and six nonprofit utility facilities. Of the homes affected, 116 were destroyed, 134 sustained major damage, 147 sustained minor damage and 89 were affected. MEMA said those figures are expected to change as county and municipal officials complete inspections.

MEMA said it is working closely with local partners to document impacts and identify unmet needs in affected communities. Three shelters remain open: Hancock County Necaise Shelter, 30360 Highway 603, Perkinston; Harrison County Safe Room, 23715 Saucier Lizana Road, Saucier; and Stone Middle School Shelter, 532A E. Central Ave., Wiggins.

Several counties have submitted official damage reports to MEMA. Covington County reported five homes, one business and 10 roads; Franklin County reported one fatality; George County reported one home, seven roads and one bridge; Hancock County reported 29 homes, three farms, five roads and one bridge; Harrison County reported 274 homes, five businesses and eight roads; Jackson County reported 12 homes; Pearl River County reported 41 homes, one business and seven roads; Rankin County reported two homes; Stone County reported 121 homes and 34 roads; and Wilkinson County reported one home and one road.

MEMA coordinates the state’s disaster response and continues to monitor needs as assessments proceed. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
