NWS issues Tornado Watch 179 for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi until 4 a.m. CDT
The National Weather Service said it has issued Tornado Watch 179, valid until 4 a.m. CDT Wednesday, replacing a portion of Tornado Watch 173.
The new watch covers one parish in northeast Louisiana, East Carroll, and 30 counties in Mississippi. Counties listed by the National Weather Service include Attala, Choctaw, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Leake, Madison, Rankin, Scott and Yazoo in central Mississippi; Kemper, Lauderdale, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee and Winston in east central Mississippi; Carroll, Grenada, Leflore, Montgomery and Webster in north central Mississippi; Clay, Lowndes and Oktibbeha in northeast Mississippi; Bolivar, Sunflower and Washington in northwest Mississippi; and Issaquena, Sharkey and Warren in west central Mississippi.
The watch notice also names communities covered by the watch, including Ackerman, Anguilla, Belzoni, Brandon, Brooksville, Canton, Carrollton, Carthage, Cleveland, Columbus, Conehatta, De Kalb, Decatur, Durant, Eupora, Forest, Goodman, Greenville, Greenwood, Grenada, Indianola, Isola, Jackson, Kosciusko, Lake Providence, Lexington, Louisville, Macon, Madison, Mathiston, Mayersville, Meridian, Morton, Newton, North Carrollton, Pearl, Pearl River, Philadelphia, Pickens, Richland, Ridgeland, Rolling Fork, Ruleville, Scooba, Starkville, Tchula, Union, Vaiden, Vicksburg, Weir, West Point, Winona and Yazoo City.
A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms; it is not a warning. The National Weather Service advises residents in the watch area to monitor forecasts, secure loose outdoor items and be prepared to seek shelter if a warning is issued. This is a developing situation and will be updated as more information becomes available.
