Nation observes Police Week honoring fallen and serving officers

This week the nation observes National Police Week, a period set aside to honor law enforcement officers who serve daily and to remember those who died in the line of duty.

Often called “Police Week,” the observance provides time for remembrance, reflection and gratitude for officers and their families. Its origins trace back more than 60 years and the observance has grown into one of the most significant annual events within law enforcement communities worldwide.

Organizations and departments typically hold memorials, ceremonies and gatherings to recognize the courage, service and sacrifice behind the badge, and to support officers coping with the emotional toll of public safety work. Advocates say the week also highlights ongoing issues affecting policing and officer wellness.

National Police Week continues to remind the public of the legacy of those who gave their lives protecting others. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
