Nation honors fallen peace officers on Peace Officers Memorial Day
Communities across the United States are observing Peace Officers Memorial Day on Friday, May 15, honoring law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. A social media post marking the day said, “We remember their sacrifice. We remember those who never made it home, and the families whose lives were forever changed by that loss.”
The observance recognizes the enduring legacy of the men and women who gave their lives protecting others and serving their communities, officials and advocates say. Families of fallen officers often face long-term emotional and financial challenges after a line-of-duty death.
In the United States, May 15 is designated Peace Officers Memorial Day and is frequently marked by ceremonies, wreath-layings, moments of silence and community tributes. Law enforcement agencies, civic groups and local governments commonly use the day to honor those who died and to raise awareness about the risks officers face while performing their duties.
The day also offers an opportunity for communities to express gratitude and support for surviving family members and colleagues of fallen officers. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
