Nation remembers fallen service members on Memorial Day
A Facebook post urged Americans to “remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,” saying their “courage and dedication will never be forgotten” and wishing the public a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday in May to honor U.S. military personnel who died while serving. Communities across the country mark the day with ceremonies, cemetery visits, moments of silence and other tributes to the fallen.
The observance dates to the 19th century and has since become a time for family gatherings and public remembrance, as well as reflection on the costs of war and service. Local governments, veterans groups and military organizations typically host parades, flag-placing events and wreath-laying ceremonies to pay respects.
The Facebook message reiterated the importance of remembering those who sacrificed their lives and encouraged safe, meaningful observances. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
