Know county location to shelter during severe weather

Residents should know their county and which National Weather Service office covers them so they can take shelter when severe weather warnings are issued, a Facebook post said.

The post noted that Mississippi is served by four National Weather Service offices: Jackson, Mississippi; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Memphis, Tennessee.

Knowing your county matters because watches and warnings are commonly issued by county or warning area, and timely sheltering can reduce risk during events such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods. The National Weather Service issues alerts intended to prompt immediate protective actions.

Officials and emergency management agencies generally advise residents to locate their county on a map, sign up for local alert systems and learn which NWS office issues forecasts for their area. Local offices and county emergency management agencies provide guidance and resources for preparedness.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
