Most of Mississippi under elevated flash flood threat
A Facebook post warned that most of Mississippi is under an Elevated (Level 2) flash flood threat through this afternoon as heavy rainfall moves across the state.
Forecasters said 1 to 3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts possible, may fall in a short period of time over already saturated soils. The post listed potential impacts including flooded roads, minor flooding of structures and flash flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.
Officials and safety campaigns urge residents to heed the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” message: just a few inches of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. Motorists should avoid driving through flooded roadways and seek higher ground if necessary.
Elevated (Level 2) typically indicates a moderate threat on a multi-level risk scale used by weather agencies, and flash flooding can develop quickly in areas with poor drainage or saturated ground. Stay weather aware and monitor local forecasts and alerts throughout the day. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
