Mississippi agency urges preparation as severe weather approaches

Parts of Mississippi are expecting severe weather tonight, and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency posted a list of steps residents can take to be prepared, the agency said on Facebook.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, known as MEMA, coordinates the state’s response to natural disasters and shares preparedness guidance with local authorities and the public. In its social media post, the agency encouraged residents to consider readiness measures ahead of the expected storms.

Officials and emergency management experts commonly recommend basic preparedness actions such as assembling an emergency kit, developing a family communication plan, securing outdoor items that could become projectiles, and identifying safe shelter locations. Residents are also urged to monitor local forecasts and alerts and to have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather radios and mobile alerts.

The potential for severe weather underscores the risk of damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding and power outages that can follow strong storms. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
