Flood Awareness Week urges homeowners to protect property

Flood Awareness Week is urging homeowners to take immediate steps to protect homes, belongings and finances as flooding already occurs in parts of the state and additional rainfall is forecast throughout the week, according to a social media advisory.

The advisory recommends that residents review their flood risk and consider flood insurance if they live in flood-prone areas. It notes that standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage and encourages homeowners to investigate available insurance options.

Officials and preparedness advocates also advise documenting important documents and valuable possessions by taking photographs before severe weather arrives. Residents are urged to sign up for local weather alerts and monitor trusted sources for the latest forecasts and warnings.

The advisory repeats established safety guidance: if you encounter flooded roads, Turn Around, Don’t Drown, and never drive or walk through floodwaters. Flooding can cause significant damage and financial loss. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
