Mississippi rundown: Vicksburg case, Jackson shootings and a pivotal football weekend

Vicksburg shooting case brings custody and bond updates

Vicksburg police said they took a 14-year-old into custody in connection with the Sept. 25 shooting death of 16-year-old Henry Trisby III at New Main Apartments. The department said the investigation was continuing and that further information would be released as it became available. A separate Mississippi News Group report on the court appearance said the teenager appeared before a judge Saturday and received a total $900,000 bond: $700,000 on a murder charge and $200,000 on a charge of shooting into an occupied dwelling. The police custody update is the latest account from the site. The charges are allegations; neither report says the case has been resolved.

Jackson police investigate two fatal shootings

Jackson police reported separate homicide investigations. In one, officers responding to a call Saturday evening found an unidentified woman dead in a gas station parking lot in the 3200 block of Medgar Evers Boulevard. Investigators were looking for a gray Honda Accord occupied by a suspect whose identity was unknown when the department issued its notice. Police asked people with information to contact JPD or Crime Stoppers, according to Mississippi News Group's Medgar Evers Boulevard report.

In the other case, police said a man suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the 200 block of Vine Street and died. The Vine Street report said a police news release was expected. The accounts do not establish a connection between the two incidents, and the Vine Street report did not identify the victim.

Dry air raises fire concerns

The National Weather Service warned of very dry air, particularly in northern parts of its Jackson forecast area, through Tuesday. It urged caution with outdoor burning and activities that could send sparks into dry vegetation, and told residents to heed local burn bans, according to Mississippi News Group's northern-area report. A separate Mid-South report said relative humidity was below 30% in some locations and repeated the warning to avoid activities that could start fires. The reports do not say that a statewide burn ban is in effect.

Mississippi State moves to 4-0 with win over Missouri

Mississippi State beat No. 19 Missouri 31-24 before a sold-out crowd at Davis Wade Stadium, improving to 4-0. Sports Mississippi reported the result. The victory sent the Bulldogs into preparations for Alabama with an unbeaten record. Coach Jeff Lebby emphasized resetting for the next opponent and maintaining consistency, according to the account. A separate Sports Mississippi account reported that quarterback Kamario Taylor threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns, while Fluff Bothwell topped 100 rushing yards and Anthony Evans III topped 100 receiving yards. Ole Miss falls at Florida

No. 4 Ole Miss lost 52-28 at No. 21 Florida, leaving the Rebels 3-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play. Sports Mississippi’s game report said Trinidad Chambliss passed for 298 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 64 yards and two scores. Deuce Alexander caught seven passes for 134 yards. In the sister site’s postgame report, coach Pete Golding pointed to missed tackles, third-down problems and special-teams mistakes. He said the team would use its bye week to evaluate execution and preparation. The game report lists Vanderbilt on October 10 as the Rebels' next opponent.

Jackson State stays unbeaten against Southern

Jackson State defeated Southern 35-17 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, improving to 4-0 overall and opening SWAC play with a win. Mississippi News Group’s game account reported that Nate Blount IV rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Jared Lockhart passed for 165 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score. The Tigers led 28-9 at halftime, then held Southern scoreless in the fourth quarter after the visitors narrowed the margin. A tipped touchdown pass caught by Alex Valbuena completed the scoring. It was Jackson State's eighth consecutive victory over Southern.

Alcorn wins another overtime game

Fredrick Robertson's one-yard touchdown run in overtime gave Alcorn State a 43-40 victory over Texas Southern. Sports Mississippi reported that Robertson finished with 175 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns, while quarterback Jaylon Tolbert passed for 332 yards. The Braves had led by as many as 22 points in the third quarter before Texas Southern forced overtime. After the visitors kicked a field goal in the extra period, Alcorn converted a fourth down on its winning possession. The result lifted Alcorn to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the SWAC.

Southern Miss loses a close Battle for the Bell

Tulane retained the Battle for the Bell trophy with a 24-21 victory over Southern Miss. Sports Mississippi reported that Landry Lyddy threw three touchdown passes, two to Mario Sanders and one to Davis Dalton. The Golden Eagles led 21-14 in the third quarter, but Tulane rallied, with Maurice Turner's long touchdown run providing the decisive score. Southern Miss reached the Tulane 3-yard line on its last drive, but a blocked field goal ended the threat. The report put Southern Miss at 1-3 and listed a trip to Troy as its next game.

Mississippi State soccer earns another road shutout

Mississippi State and Kentucky played to a 0-0 draw Sunday in Lexington, following the Bulldogs' scoreless result at Tennessee less than 72 hours earlier. Mississippi News Group’s match report reported that Jenny Harrison made five saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Mississippi State had early chances through Kyli Switalski and Hailey Johnson but could not find a goal. The Bulldogs had earned points in every SEC match through the cutoff. The account lists a home match against South Carolina at 6 p.m. Central Friday, October 2, with coverage on ESPNU.
