Vicksburg police investigate stabbing at Merit Health River Region

VICKSBURG, Miss. — Officers with the Vicksburg Police Department responded to Merit Health River Region about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, after a reported stabbing, the department said in a release Sunday.

The preliminary investigation found a 19-year-old woman had sustained a stab wound to the chest. Medical personnel at the hospital determined she suffered a small puncture to one of her lungs, but the injury is not believed to be life-threatening, the release said.

Investigators have obtained statements from the individuals involved and are working to determine the circumstances and sequence of events that led to the injury, the department said. The investigation remains active and no charges have been filed.

Merit Health River Region is a hospital serving Vicksburg and the surrounding area. The Vicksburg Police Department is the municipal law enforcement agency for the city and conducts investigations of violent incidents in its jurisdiction.
