VICKSBURG, Miss. — Police arrested a 26-year-old man early Sunday after finding him asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle with two minor children inside at a Waffle House, the Vicksburg Police Department said.
Officers responded about 4:45 a.m. to the Waffle House at 2455 North Frontage Road on a request for a welfare check, the department said. Deputies with the Warren County Sheriffs Office assisted officers in several attempts to wake the driver.
Officers noticed a firearm in the drivers waistband while trying to rouse him, the department said. They unlocked the vehicle and secured the firearm before continuing efforts to wake the driver, who eventually regained consciousness, appeared unaware of his location and became combative as officers removed him from the vehicle.
The driver was identified as LaTrell Ward, 26, of Vicksburg. Family members later arrived and took custody of the two children and the vehicle. A records check revealed an active warrant through the Warren County Sheriffs Office, and Ward was taken into custody.
After booking on the outstanding warrant at the sheriffs office, deputies transported Ward to the Vicksburg Police Department, where an Intoxilyzer test indicated a blood alcohol level of 0.18. He was booked by the Vicksburg Police Department and charged with DUI first offense, child endangerment and convicted felon in possession of a firearm. No injuries were reported.
