Southaven Police Department said in a Facebook post that officers attended a Community Outreach and Trauma Injury Prevention Event at the NWCC Ranger Center to discuss weapon safety and related injury prevention measures.
The department said officers distributed gun locks and talked with attendees about safe storage practices. It added that dispatchers demonstrated how they provide medical instruction over the phone to callers before first responders arrive on scene.
The event, the police department said, was organized with support from the Mississippi Trauma Care System Foundation, which the post credited for bringing the resources together. Southaven Police said it expects to return for the event next year.
Gun locks and dispatcher pre-arrival instructions are common elements of public safety and injury prevention efforts because they can reduce the risk of accidental shootings and improve outcomes in medical emergencies. Southaven Police Department shared the update on its official Facebook page.
