Ring camera captures black bear near Utica on Hwy 27
Video footage captured earlier shows a black bear on Highway 27 near Highway 18 in the Utica area, a local resident told authorities after their Ring doorbell camera recorded the animal and the resident shared the clip with HCSO.
The video was provided to HCSO, which received reports from the resident, according to the person who submitted the footage. No further details about the encounter or any injuries were released.
Black bears (Ursus americanus) are native to North America and are often reported near roads and residential areas when they search for food. Encounters can pose risks to motorists and residents because animals may move quickly across roadways or explore yards and trash containers.
Officials and wildlife experts generally advise people to keep a safe distance from bears, secure garbage and pet food, and avoid approaching or feeding wild animals. Ring and other home cameras have become a common way for residents to document wildlife activity and alert authorities.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
