Authorities respond to black bear sightings in Utica
Hinds County and Utica police responded to sightings of at least two black bears in the Utica area this afternoon, the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office said.
A photo shared by a local resident shows one of the bears that was sighted. The sheriff’s office said it is aware of a recent uptick in black bear sightings across parts of the county and is monitoring reports.
The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office urged residents to stay alert, secure food sources around homes, keep pets close and avoid approaching or attempting to feed wildlife. The office asked people to report sightings to local authorities so officials can help keep both the community and the animals safe, the statement said.
Black bears are native to much of North America and typically avoid people, but they can be drawn to neighborhoods by unsecured trash, pet food and bird feeders. Officials say taking steps to reduce attractants can lower the risk of encounters. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
