Police arrest two after aggravated assault in Hattiesburg

Two people were taken into custody Thursday following an aggravated assault in Hattiesburg, the Hattiesburg Police Department said in a Facebook post.

At approximately 2:06 p.m., officers apprehended Jazzton Roberts, 22, and Jeremiah Silas, 21, both of Hattiesburg, in the 6000 block of Highway 98 after the pair attempted to flee the scene in a pickup truck, police said.

Two victims were evaluated at the scene and one was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, the department said. Investigators determined the weapon used in the assault was a BB gun, not a handgun, and that the incident was not random; the people involved were known to one another, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hattiesburg Police Department at 601-544-7900 or Metro Crime Stoppers by dialing TIPS. This is a developing story and will be updated as more details emerge.
