Oxford Police Department said its school resource officers are helping teachers, staff and students in every way they can during the first week of school, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. “Serving with wisdom and compassion means showing up wherever you’re needed,” the department said.
School resource officers, commonly known as SROs, are sworn law-enforcement officers assigned to schools to promote safety, respond to incidents and build relationships with students and staff. Departments across the country use SROs to provide an on-site law enforcement presence and to work with school administrators on prevention and response strategies.
The department said its SROs are assisting school personnel as classes begin and wished students and staff a safe and successful school year. The presence of SROs during the start of the academic year can help ease transitions, address safety concerns and provide immediate support when issues arise.
