Mississippi post urges drivers to leave one car length per 10 mph

A Facebook post titled “Traffic Tip Thursday” urged drivers to maintain a safe following distance, citing Mississippi Code § 63-3-619 and recommending leaving at least one car length for every 10 mph.

The post cautioned that many motorists follow too closely and included the line, “we support healthy relationships…just not at 45 mph,” saying close following can leave drivers unable to stop in time.

Traffic safety guidance commonly promotes extra space between vehicles to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions and to give drivers time to react to sudden stops or hazards.

Motorists are advised to give the vehicle ahead breathing room, avoid distractions and adjust following distance for speed and road conditions. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
