National Weather Service warns of dangerous heat in Mississippi
The National Weather Service warned Friday that dangerous heat stress conditions will build across Mississippi over the weekend into next week, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said in a Facebook post.
The agency said high temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s, with heat indices — what it feels like when humidity is factored in — climbing to 105 to 110 degrees. The post urged residents to hydrate, wear sunscreen and take breaks.
The National Weather Service issues forecasts and warnings for severe weather, while the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency coordinates the states preparedness and public information efforts. Heat warnings aim to reduce heat-related illnesses by informing residents and organizations to take precautions.
Health officials generally advise limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours, checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbors and keeping pets and children out of hot vehicles. Employers and event organizers may need to adjust schedules or provide cooling options to reduce heat exposure.
We will provide more information as it becomes available.
